Ep 24: Hot Take #2: Why Spring Beats Fall for Family Photos
Hey, hi, hello, sweet friend
Welcome back to the Kelsi Bailey Photography Podcast. Today we’re diving into the second episode in my quarterly hot take series—and this one might surprise you.
Because while fall has long held the crown as the season for family photos… I’m here to gently challenge that.
My hot take? Spring is actually the best time of year to have your family photographed.
Let’s talk about why.
1. The Light Is Next-Level
Fall light is warm, cozy, and golden—there’s no denying that.
But spring light?
It’s bright, playful, and illuminating in a completely different way.
Instead of wrapping you in warmth, it lights you up from within.
Even better:
- You’re not limited to a tiny golden hour window
- You have more flexibility throughout the day
- And the light feels more energetic, fresh, and alive
For me, it’s hands-down my favorite light to photograph in.
2. The Foliage Feels More Timeless
Fall foliage is beautiful—but it’s also very seasonal.
And when those images are hanging on your walls year-round, they can start to feel tied to a specific moment (hello, post-Christmas reset urge 👀).
Spring, on the other hand:
- Offers a longer window of beauty (buds → blooms → early summer greens)
- Feels fresh and neutral enough to live in your home year-round
- Doesn’t rely on a short, unpredictable peak season
It’s timeless in a way fall often isn’t.
3. Your Outfits Feel More Like You
Fall wardrobes tend to fall into a familiar pattern:
- Sweaters
- Boots
- Layers
- Holiday-ready looks
And while that’s beautiful, it can also feel… expected.
Spring gives you freedom:
- Soft pastels
- Florals
- Light textures
- Playful layers
It’s a season that invites personality, movement, and a little more creativity.
4. Your Schedule Feels Less Rushed
Let’s be honest—fall gets chaotic.
Back-to-school.
Sports.
Holidays creeping in.
Trying to squeeze photos in “just in time.”
And suddenly, your session feels like one more thing on your to-do list.
Spring offers a different rhythm:
- Longer days = more scheduling flexibility
- A natural sense of freshness and reset
- Less pressure tied to deadlines (like holiday cards)
Which means your session can feel more relaxed… and actually enjoyable.
A Gentle Reminder
If fall photos are your tradition—keep them. Love them. Celebrate them.
But if you’ve been booking fall sessions simply because you thought it was the best time…
I want you to know: it’s not the only option.
Spring might just surprise you.
