Ep 31: How to Use Instagram Without Letting It Use You

There was a time when Instagram felt simple.

You logged on to see your friends’ vacation photos, follow your favorite brands, maybe keep up with a celebrity or two—and then you logged off. Easy.

But now?

Instagram can feel noisy. Overstimulating. Triggering. Exhausting.

For entrepreneurs, it often feels like a necessary part of doing business. For moms, it can feel like another thing competing for your time and attention. And for many of us, it can quickly become a place where comparison, doom scrolling, and impulse purchases sneak in before we even realize what’s happening.

In this week’s episode of The Kelsi Bailey Photography Podcast, I’m sharing how I’ve created healthier boundaries with Instagram so I can still use it for business, creativity, and connection—without letting it completely drain me.

Because here’s the truth:

Your Instagram account should be working for you—not the other way around.

In this episode, we discuss:

Mute accounts that no longer serve you
You do not owe anyone access to your attention. If an account consistently makes you feel anxious, triggered, overwhelmed, or “less than,” use the mute button.

Use the save feature intentionally
Think of this like your personal Pinterest board inside Instagram. Save recipes, inspiration, workouts, photography ideas, and revisit them later—without endless scrolling.

Subscribe to email lists instead of following brands
This one may feel controversial—but it works. If brand marketing on social media constantly tempts you to impulse shop, unsubscribe from their social content and subscribe to their emails instead.

Train your algorithm
Use the “interested” and “not interested” features to help Instagram learn what content you actually want to see.

Set screen time limits
A simple app timer can make you much more aware of how much time you’re spending online.

Stop using Instagram as market research
I used to spend way too much time “researching trends.” Now? I let ChatGPT help me brainstorm content ideas instead.

Create content outside the app
Write captions in your notes app. Design graphics in Canva. Organize photos ahead of time. Then log in, post, and log right back off.

Why this matters

Social media isn’t inherently bad. Instagram can be a powerful tool for business owners and creatives.

But boundaries matter.

You deserve to enjoy social media without feeling consumed by it. You deserve to build a business without being chained to an app. And you deserve to protect your peace online.

This episode will help you do exactly that.

Listen now and start taking back control of your social media habits.
