Ep 022: 6 Fears Every Family Has Before a Photo Session (And Why You Don’t Need to Worry)

Booking a photo session is exciting… but it can also feel a little vulnerable.

Over the years, I’ve received countless emails from clients saying something like:

“We’re so excited for our session… but we’re also a little nervous.”

And honestly? I completely understand.

Having your family photographed can bring up all sorts of worries—from wondering how your kids will behave to questioning whether you’ll look awkward in front of the camera.

In this episode of The Kelsi Bailey Photography Podcast, I’m walking through the six most common fears families experience before a photo session and why they’re completely normal.

More importantly, we’re talking about why you don’t need to worry about them at all.

Fear #1: “What if my kids don’t cooperate?”

This is the number one concern I hear from parents.

But here’s the truth: kids don’t need to cooperate perfectly for beautiful photos to happen.

Children being themselves—whether that means giggling, running, snuggling, or even melting down for a moment—is often where the most meaningful images come from.

Your kids don’t need to perform. They just need to show up as themselves.

Fear #2: “We’re awkward in front of the camera.”

Let me reassure you of something important:

You’re not awkward.

You’re just not professional models, and that’s exactly how it should be.

It’s my job as your photographer to guide you through poses, adjust the little details, and make sure everyone feels comfortable and connected.

You don’t need to know what to do with your hands—I’ve got you.

Fear #3: “What if we don’t have the perfect outfits?”

The perfect outfit isn’t about trends, brands, or Pinterest inspiration.

The perfect outfit is one that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

When you feel relaxed in what you’re wearing, that comfort shows up naturally in your photos.

Your outfits should support the session—not stress you out.

Fear #4: “What if our house isn’t Pinterest-perfect?”

If you’re booking an in-home session, you might feel pressure for your home to look magazine-worthy.

But that’s not what in-home photography is about.

Your home tells the story of your life right now—movie nights on the couch, baking cookies in the kitchen, toddlers running down the hallway.

Those everyday spaces are the ones you’ll someday miss the most.

Fear #5: “I’m sorry our kids are being crazy.”

Parents often apologize during sessions when their kids are energetic or chaotic.

But here’s the thing: chaos is part of childhood.

Movement, laughter, silliness, and even a little wild energy are often what bring photos to life.

We’re not trying to freeze your family—we’re trying to capture it.

Fear #6: “Is photography really worth the investment?”

Photography is an investment, and it’s natural to wonder if it’s worth it.

But after photographing families for more than a decade, I can confidently say this:

Your photos grow more valuable with time.

The images you receive today will mean even more five years from now—and even more ten years from now.

We rarely regret the photos we take.

We usually regret the ones we didn’t.

A Final Reminder Before Your Session

If you’re feeling nervous about your upcoming photo session, take a deep breath.

Your kids are allowed to be kids.
Your home is allowed to look lived in.
You are allowed to feel a little nervous.

And together, we’re going to create something beautiful.
